Context
Paul writes to the church in Ephesus. Just before these verses he describes people as spiritually dead in sin, then declares that God, rich in mercy, made them alive together with Christ. Verses 8-9 explain how: by grace through faith, as a gift. The very next verse (2:10) adds that we are “created in Christ Jesus for good works,” so good works are the result of salvation, not its cause. Grace comes first, and a changed life follows.
