“For God so loved the world”
God's love is the starting point. “The world” means all people everywhere, not a select few; God's love reaches the whole human race.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” , John 3:16 (WEB)
John 3:16 means that God loves the whole world so much that he gave his only Son, Jesus, so that anyone who trusts in him will not be lost but will have eternal life. In one sentence it captures the heart of the Christian message: God's love is the source, Jesus is the gift, faith is the response, and eternal life is the promise.
God's love is the starting point. “The world” means all people everywhere, not a select few; God's love reaches the whole human race.
Love that costs something. God didn't just feel love; he gave, offering his unique Son, Jesus, as the proof and means of that love.
The invitation is open to anyone (“whoever”), and the response God asks for is belief, a real trust in Jesus, not merely agreeing he exists.
The two outcomes: being lost apart from God, or receiving eternal life, a restored relationship with God that begins now and lasts forever.
Jesus speaks these words at night to Nicodemus, a respected Jewish teacher, in John chapter 3. Jesus has just spoken of being “born again” and of being “lifted up” (a reference to his coming death on the cross). John 3:16 sums up why: the cross is God's love in action, opening the way to life for anyone who believes.
John 3:16 is both comfort and invitation. If you have ever wondered whether God loves you, this verse answers plainly: yes, enough to give his Son. The response it calls for is simple trust in Jesus. Open Explain a PassageThat God loves the whole world so much that he gave his only Son, Jesus, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. It is a one-sentence summary of the gospel: God's love, the gift of Jesus, faith as the response, and eternal life as the result.
Eternal life is more than living forever; it is a restored relationship with God through Jesus that begins the moment a person believes and continues beyond death. It is both a quality of life (knowing God) and an unending one.
Jesus said it during a night-time conversation with Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader, as recorded in John chapter 3.
