Bible Verses About Comfort

When life is heavy, Scripture points us to a God who draws near to the hurting and comforts us in our affliction. These verses are a gentle place to turn when you, or someone you love, needs comfort.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction. (WEB)

God is the “Father of mercies,” and the comfort he gives us is meant to overflow to others.

Psalm 34:18

Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. (WEB)

God draws especially close in our most broken moments, not far away.

Matthew 5:4

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” Jesus blesses grief and promises comfort.

Psalm 23:4

Even in the valley, “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” Comfort comes from the Shepherd's presence.

John 14:1

“Don't let your heart be troubled.” Jesus steadies anxious hearts with trust in God and in him.

Isaiah 66:13

“As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.” God's comfort is tender and personal.

Applying these verses

When you need comfort, try praying 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 slowly, receiving God's comfort and asking him to make you a comfort to someone else. Often the comfort we receive in a hard season becomes the very thing we can offer another person walking the same road.
